Alternative Sand Tray Approaches
There are
many books that have been written on the theoretical foundation and process of
utilizing sand trays in the healing process. However, many of these books
are deep in their metaphorical understanding of the objects chosen as well as
overall design of the tray. The novice therapist may seem reluctant to
utilize this technique due to the complexity of the information. However,
the sand tray can be helpful to many children when used as a tool to help them
explore and express feelings, develop insight into personal and family issues,
and get safety needs met in a safe and non-threatening manner. This
presentation will cover several techniques for using the sand tray as a tool to
help children process events in their lives and develop effective coping
mechanisms. We will review important figurines to have in your collection
as well as basic instructions to provide the child. The workshop will conclude
with sample process questions to help the child explore their creation.
